I have heard many, many, many great reviews on the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler that I had to see what all the fuss was about! I first read about it online and many gals were saying how it doesn't pinch, really curls and stays because of the silicone pad at the bottom which is curved to prevent the horrific "L-Shaped" lashes. When I saw pics of this holy grail curler, I remember saying to myself "It's not that special, it looks like a regular drugstore eyelash curler...". I went to SEPHORA and thought i'd buy one just to see for myself, I first noticed the mini one which is interesting because it's not even an inch wide, it's like a tiny square, similar to the Koji ones.
I bought the regular sized one and compared it to my drugstore eyelash curler LA CROSS, and noticed a huge difference. The arm and eye piece are angled differently thus giving you more of a comfortable angle when curling your lashes and preventing "pinching".
Here is a view from the top of the two side by side, the Shu one is on the left, notice how much wider it is. The silicone pad is also a lot 'fatter, it's soft and curved giving more space between your lid and lashes so no pinching!
In case you are wondering how my lashes look with the LA CROSS one, it just 'lifted' my lashes, you can look at some old FOTD's where this was used...

OVERALL? I really like this eyelash curler, mind you I rarely curl my lashes because I am lazy, but I will from now on because this really does the job, the results were amazing without mascara, I can only imagine how it would look with mascara or even when heated with a blow dryer! What I loved is how it didn't even pinch me ONCE, unlike my old one (drugstore one) which did all the time no matter how careful I was. I really liked how it gave me a nice natural curve rather than the L-Shaped lashes. It's a bit steep in price ($18), but this new revised one comes with the replacement pad (unlike the old version), and it works!
I love the Sonia Kushuk eyelash and brow comb!
Oh... thank you for doing a review on the shu eumura eyelash curler. i have been thinking a lot about getting one but my mind is debating on the shiseido eyelash curler as well. great photos to prove too!! thanks again! have you thought of doing a review on the shiseido curler? maybe like a comparison between the two?
ReplyDeleteIm so glad you did this review! I've been wondering about this eyelash curler for forever but I never buy it because Im like... "ugh thats one MAC shadow... does it even work... 18 bucks?" Im def. getting one now! thanks
ReplyDeleteThank you :]
ReplyDeleteI've always wondered about this "holy grail" eyelash curler. I mean, I thought it was just any other ordinary curler, LOL. But noooo, it looks like it works!! Far out, your lashes look amazing. And with no mascara :O
what a great review. :] i always though about buying a shu curler but figured that heating my cheapo curler with a blow dryer works just as good. :P when i get a decent job i'll def be investing in this though. :]
ReplyDeleteI've heard good things of it to. And when I get off my butt and ready to invest the $18, I will get it, lol. Well, I could always return my Tarte and just pay the difference. Hmm.. I'll probably do that, lol.
ReplyDeleteI have a similar eyelash comb that I LOVE! It's the tweezerman one and it's got the metal spikes. Those kind do such an amazing job until they poke your eye. I hardly use mine anymore for lack of time, but it's THE BEST EVER!
man you've got long lashes!! Lucky girl. I have the Shu curler too BUT i think i like the shiseido one now lool..try it out ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm too lazy to do the blowdryer thing most of the time too. LOL! I only do it when I REALLY wanna get dolled up and want to have pretty pretty lashes. LOL! :P
ReplyDeleteI remember reading about the mixing medium on the mineral makeup forums, and then your blog, and then again on lynne's. LOL. I just kinda ignored it because I didn't really start getting into pigments till lately and I ALWAYS foil them. :] So now, it's something that I might wanna use regularly. After seeing Lynne's review using it with NYX's Lagoon it finally pushed me into wanting to actually try it. LOL. I'm always too lazy to make do-it-yourself type things but this just may be worth it! LOL!
Water works fine when I foil my pigments, but I'm wondering how much of a difference the actual mixing medium will make. :P So yeah. Hehe. :D But I definitely DO remember when you first posted about it a long time ago. :] I just didn't use pigments that much at the time so I wasn't too concerned about trying it. :P Now I am, damn She Space eyeshadows. LOL! JK. :D
I've been very lazy too nowadays and always "forgot" to curl them even though it makes a huge difference.
ReplyDeleteThat Sonia Kashuk comb is very smart!
Also, I've awarded you with the "You Make My Day award" (because you do, really): see my recent post! :-)
i just bought the same curler too this week. your review is on point because I feel the same way about it. love it!
ReplyDeleteOo, I need to get a lash comb too! (Adding it to my Target list now...)
ReplyDeleteHave a great day hon'!!
woah. your lashes are super long even without mascara!!!
ReplyDeleteI purchased the shu eyelash curler a couple of years ago, and thought it would be my HG curler with all the hype - and I ended up giving it away to my little sister! My lashes are sparse, but pretty curly already, and the shu just did too damn good a job! LOL! I ended up with that "L" situation you were talking about. But so many people love this curler, I think my experience is in the minority :)
ReplyDeleteGood review! I'm still trying to figure out my $1 ELF eyelash curler LOL!!! All I get is crunchy looking lashes. I debate over buying something more expensive to see if it is the cheapness that is keeping me from beautiful lashes or am I just a spaz and wouldn't be able to work it regardless :D
ReplyDeleteI LURVE my shu curler!
ReplyDeleteBest buy ever!
Love it!
Wish they made replacement pads damnit!
i love this curler.. it cos about 34USD in UK, but i got mine from japan and it was worth about 10USD LOL. wow the difference! anyway great review =)
ReplyDeleteVanessa, Thanks for your compliment!! I was trying this new thing I watched on a Taiwan variety show on 'how to make your eyes appear bigger', maybe that's why it looks good...Make up does wonders!!!
ReplyDeletenice review - the shu seems to work wonders on lashes! I have the shisheido one, and it seems to do a lot better than the $1 ELF eyelash curler I'd been using...I wonder which one does a better job, shu or shisheido?
ReplyDeletelol. I <3 my shu curler too! course I don't have the "new" and improved one, but i still <3 mine! but if you try the pump and out method your lashes will look amazing with this curler. weird i know...:P
ReplyDeletehey honey bunches! great review...i love my shu curler...i had one from revlon and it definitely pinched me...i never used to curl my lashes b/c i thought no one could see them but now that i've discovered ardell lash and brow accelerator...now i have something more to curl, hehe. luckily you have plentinful lashes...i really do think the shu makes a difference on yah :)
ReplyDeleteI love love love my Shu curler...i'm also a huge fan of the sonia kashuk eyelash and brow comb...excellent review..thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou're so lucky your lashes don't shoot straight downwards like mine do T_T Shu is the ONLY eyelash curler that curls my lashes at all! I wonder if I bring it in too close, though. My bulgy monolid DOES get pinched :(
ReplyDeleteI know I've said this before, but your lashes are luxurious!
ReplyDeleteI have both the Shu and Shiseido curlers, and I will never go back to the cheaper ones again. The ones I've had all pinched, and gave the terrible "L" shape!
How is it in comparison to a Shiseido curler?
ReplyDeleteThey are pretty much the same I have both of them and they both work the same way.
