Question of the Day- Do you think matching your makeup to your outfit is tacky?

I think this is a very good topic because I can see both sides of this statement and I actually know a few people who agree it is tacky.

I personally like matching my makeup to my outfits because I think both the makeup and the colors on the outfit compliment each other and bring you and your features out more, just like how some people match their shoes to their outfits at times. I can't imagine myself wearing blue eyeshadow and I am wearing orange, so hence I would wear a coral or orange eyeshadow or lipgloss to sorta make the outfit seem more in sync with each other. I don't think matching makeup to your outfits is a must, I think many colors go well with neutrals such as a white or a black outfit, but I personally like matching my makeup to my outfits. As long as you don't go TOO overboard and be too "matchy-matchy" as in the accessories, makeup, outfit, and shoes are all the same solid color, I think anyone can pull off something simple like one or two things that match, but that's just MY opinion, I know everyone is different.

So LADIES, what's your take on it? I would love to hear both sides, and if you DO think it's a makeup faux-pas, tell us why!

  1. you know...over and over i've heard don't match your makeup to your clothes and i usually try to avoid it...usually sticking to looks whose vibe goes with my outfit...of if i wear black or white i have a field day with colors...it's funny though b/c i've been pointed out by my boyfriend on a few occasions where i've matched my makeup to my clothes inadvertantly...i think you're right though...as long as it's not too matchy matchy...for example, for proms and formals, if you have a hot pink dress i dont think you should rock hot pink shadow...it's too much hot pink!

  2. hey V,
I'm always wondering that question myself. I always question if I should match my makeup to my outfit.

After seeing so many girls on blogs and youtube match their makeup to their clothes, I believe that it is just perfectly fine. I never really understood that whole rule, its like if you dont match with your outfit then what colors are you supposed to use for your makeup? well besides the natural and doing that all the time is just plain boring you know.

SO now i just match, or use like a plumish color when i dont want to stand out too much. lol

  3. i usually do kind of match my eyeshadows to my outfit. but then again, i'm wearing an ugly blue polo shirt to work everyday, but my eyeshadow usually matches the top i'm wearing underneath. hehe...

I guess you can say as long as it's in the realm of the color scheme, then yes I do.

and i do agree with Ren on the hot pink dress and NOT wearing hot pink shadow. too much.

  4. I definitely wear makeup to complement what I'm wearing. I would never wear green makeup with a pink outfit - unless I'm wearing a matching pink lipstick! LOL

It's fun for me, and that's what makeup is - fun. Most days I don't wear colors, my wardrobe is mostly black (90%) so I can wear whatever colors fit my mood. But when I do wear colors, I match my makeup :)

  5. I like to coordinate my eye makeup to my outfit. Like you said not too matchy matchy but I do like to coordinate and my hubby likes it too :).

  6. I don't personally think your makeup should match exactly (i.e. blue shirt w/ blue shoes, hand bag, and eyeshadow), but I think you have to make sure you don't clash either (i.e. blue eye shadow, red lipgloss, green shirt, purple bag).

  7. I don't know what's so faux pas about it really. I mean, if you're wearing a plaid shirt or tie dye, I mean it wouldn't make sense to put EVERY single color on your shirt on your eyes, you know? But if you can go with the same color theme and it "goes" with what you're wearing, then why not? There are certain colors that contrast nicely between clothing and eyeshadow, but I think the main part is how does it look overall.

I personally just do whatever tickles my fancy at the moment. But I think it's just personal preference. Everyone has their own unique style in how they wear their makeup. As long as you have fun and do what you do because you like it, then who cares about rules, right? Heh.

  8. I do this 90% of the time...I think a lot of the time if I don't match my makeup with my clothes everything will clash..

  10. Well, as long as its not gold eyeshadow, golden tinge lipstick, gold earrings, golden dress...etc

Matching eye shadows or lipsticks with outfits look great and well put together. It also shows that the person takes time to make herself look good and is highly recommended by many fashion experts. But the same color all over one's face and body looks ghastly!

  11. i've read in many publications that matching your make-up w/ your outfit is a no-no, but i think it's perfectly fine as long as it's not overdone.

i have a habit of matching my shoes with my outfit (which is probably why i have so mant :D), so why not match your make-up?

  12. Hey! Sorry I'm leaving this anonymous! I just don't have a blogger but I LOVEE reading your blog! I just had a question though, what do you recommend for a mineral makeup or a foundation overall?

  13. Hi Anonymous! Thanks so much! I highly recommend Silk Naturals, they allow you to customize your own shade yourself by mixing a light and dark powder (recipe is included) and very easy to make! I also like MMBB (www.mymineralsbathandbody.com)

  14. Personally, I dont actually consciously match makeup and fashion but i dont think there's anything wrong with it, it can be very tasteful!

  15. hey nessa.I personally never let my makeup and clothes match, though I never let them clash. However I think that except for a few cardinal ones like never wearing black lipliner or foundation that's several shades lighter than your neck and look like a mask, there should be no rules when it comes to makeup.

  16. meh. i don't care what fashion/beauty critics say, I LOOOVE TO MATCH MY EYESHADOWS TO MY OUTFIT. the only time i don't match my e/s is when i'm wearing all black, and that's when i just pick out a color to wear.

the only thing i won't do is say, wear a purple outfit, purple makeup, purple shoes, purple accessories. too much purple, ya know. i tend to use my makeup as my single, outstanding "accessory," and keep my jewelry to a minimum. i wear silver rings, silver bracelets, and ONE obnoxiously big ring on my right index finger.

  17. I definitely match my makeup to my outfit. Sometimes it's more subtle, but other times (depending on what I'm wearing) I really go for it with the color. I think it makes it more fun to get ready in the morning, too! I really enjoy playing around with the colors and getting to blend colors together!

    :)

  18. I like to match my makeup to my outfits..if i dont really wanna look matchy matchy then i wud wear colors that are similar like for example if im wearing an orange shirt and i dont wanna wear orange eyeshadow, then i would choose to wear golds or browns for eyeshadows.

  19. For me, it is ok to match your make up with your outfit as long as you feel comfortable with it!!! And it dpends on the colors you use. I believe if the outfit is super bright, then you can use the same color for e/s but toned down color. just my 2cents :D Have a beautiful day everyone!

  20. I believe that it's okay to match, but not "overboard" just like how your opinion is.

What I perceive as super overboard is like matching nailpolish, matching jewelry, matching shoes, matching purse, matching hairpiece, matching eyemakeup. It's just too much if the whole outfit looks like one huge blob of color, you know?

But if there's some variation in the clothes and accessories, I'm sure having the eye makeup matching is just fine. Like, a really cute red top with some jeans and black pumps while wearing pink eyemakeup. something like that.

Matching head to toe is a no-no but strategic matching is go-go :D (wow I just made up such a corny rhyme XD)

  21. If anything, I like to match my e/s with just my top. :) But yes I agree with you; as long as you don't be too matchy-matchy, it's alright.

  22. Half of the time I do match my eyeshadow with my outfit. Some times I just do a neutral color. I worry that my makeup will clash with my clothes so I play it safe and use the same color as my top or a neutral.

    ReplyDelete
  23. O i actually do the same as you. I match my top to my eyes. and if i am wearing black, my eyes are like purple, blue or something other then black. and if i am wearing white its like pinks or corals for the eyes.
but everything else I match top to eyes. green top to green eye shadow...etc. I just find it wierd to have pink eye shadows with a blue top or something like that.

  24. I think make-up is supposed to compliment your face, not the outfit. It all of a sudden makes the outfit turn into a costume if you're wearing the same color lipstick/eyeshadow as your top. I'm a MUA and at work we get LOTS of older women and drag queens (customers) that literally match their lipstick to their tops, the eyeshadows to the shoes etc...

  25. I'm guilty of matching. I've had the tacky comment on my blog a few times about my matching but seriously if you use colors that are dramatic and bold you seriously have to match up your outfit or you'll look like an ass in my opinion.

I mean if you're wearing some bold, funky green you can't go and wear a pink top.

It makes me so angry when people comment to tell me "You're tacky matching your shadow!"

I feel like telling them that's tackier to walk around with bright blue shadow and a yellow top!

    grr!

    rant over!

  26. To be honest, I actually like it when eyeshadow and clothing colors match. Just in a different hue or shade of the same color.

They used to say blue eyeshadow is tacky and now it's all over magazines. They might bite their tongue again.

  27. hey nessa, i shy away from trying to match my makeup to my clothes.. like others have mentioned hot pink shirt, hot pink purse, hot pink earrings and a hot pink hair accessory def does not need hot pink makeup, but i think it's all about balance. i like to play up something that i really like about my outfit like shoes, or i'll add a pop of color to my eyes or lips that may match an accessory like a ring or my nails.... all about balance baby!

  28. Hey nessa! You have a great blog going here! Anyways, I believe there is a fine between tasteful and tacky when matching. I personally think a peachy, coral-ly face is phenomenal.
You just have to find the right balance in order to look good. This is random, but I absolutely bright white eyeshadow, lol.

  29. Nessa, there's nothing tacky bout matching your outfit with makeup. I hardly did that before but once my sister-in-law pointed out that people would look much better if there's no color clash, then I started to pay attention to my make up and what I'm wearing.

  30. Eh sometimes, depends if you go over the top with the colors and match every spec of color with your outfit. nothing wrong with matching the main color of your outfit imho.

    ReplyDelete
  31. for me, it depends on my mood and the overall harmony of the look. if i feel that the matching is not overpowering its fine. it really depends too on one's fashion and beauty taste. there may be a general rule, but for me i just usually stick to what makes me feel comfy and what I THINK looks nice. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. If they're basically the same color,..YES. However the eye and shirt are different colors, but still compliment each other, then no (:

    ReplyDelete
  33. What is meant by not matching? Does it mean if you are wearing a pink/blue top you should wear yellow or purple eyeshadow? Now that would be tacky. I would wear pink of blue eyeshadow maybe both but not an exact match as my top.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I honestly think it's just on preference, there is no right or wrong, it's whatever you feel or makes you feel comfortable in. I mean so many people aren't comfortable in bright colored makeup it doesn't mean that those who DO wear bright colored makeup are "tacky", it's just preference.

Some like their eyeshadows matching their top, nothing wrong with that, some don't, nothing wrong with that either.
