Yes, still alive. Thankfully.

.

Yes. I am still alive...

I have reasons for my long absence. Some of which I feel should not be disclosed in detail here simply for the privacy for my family, but to sum it up; both my grandparents have been very ill. And no not a cold, or a flu, but rather life-threatening complications. I have been so busy physically taking care of both my grandparents, taking them to their endless doctor appointments, surgeries, and therapy; waiting 2 months anxiously to see if all the medications and therapy is working, as well as trying to plan a wedding (which is another reason as to why I haven't bought any makeup!), save up and look for a place, and all the while working a full-time job managing 8 people. You can imagine that the last thing on my mind is to get on a computer period; let alone take pictures, edit them and do reviews, as well as responding to countless emails and comments. This also explains my absence across the web, or my sporadic updates on Facebook. And yes, even though "it only takes a few minutes" to post something, I have been so exhausted and emotionally drained; and each day has become so robotic for me, that there are just some things that went on the back burner, and thus includes me even remotely being on a computer.

The feeling of watching someone close to you go into surgery, and not knowing whether they will come out ok, is scary and it's hard for me to even describe it without bursting into tears.

I apologize to all of my loyal readers who have followed me post after post, day after day, from one life experience to another. I am SO incredibly grateful to those of you for your undying support, who understand and need no further explanations from me. It saddens me however that there are some people who were angered by my lack of writing about something so petty and trivial such as makeup which pales in comparison to the chaotic and most trialing time my family as well as myself is enduring. To even going as far as attacking my sister, and some of my family members who did ME a service by offering to respond to some of you. I am sorry if any of you felt like I abandoned you, but understand I could not and would not abandon my grandparents, or any one in my family who needed me there. Everything happened so fast and all at once; hitting me like a ton of bricks. That up to now it's still hard for me to swallow and wrap my head around everything, and therefore I was unable to even keep anyone in the loop, including my friends in real life.

I am honestly not obligated to blog for anyone. PERIOD. Unless you are putting money in my pocket or a smile on my face, I owe you nothing, as I don't expect anything from any of you. I blogged to help people with swatches, new products, or the makeup-challenged, and now that I have to turn my back for a bit to help my grandparents, I feel like I am being shunned. I could have been dead for all you know, and yet it's rude that I haven't blogged?!! There are MILLIONS of other beauty blogs, and anyone is more than welcome to start their own to entertain themselves, but to seriously talk crap because one hasn't blogged, and not even knowing the rhyme or reason as to why they haven't blogged is just RIDICULOUS. IT'S MAKEUP PEOPLE!!!! When it comes to my family, they are first no matter what. I am not going to even THINK about tweeting or blogging, or updating my Facebook wall just to say "Taking my grandpa for his surgery to get the fluid out of his lungs". And if you still feel like I should have blogged about all this sooner, again the last thing on my mind. It's personal and irrelevant to this blog.

This sad situation has made me realize that life begins and essentially ends, whether we like it or not. We MUST enjoy every minute we have with those we love, because nothing in life is guaranteed. Everything is in God's hands and all I can do is pray to have one more day and one more minute with the people I love. And as I grow older, I realize that my parents, as well as my grandparents are too, getting older, and their health is deteriorating. It's now my turn to take care of the people that helped take care of me.I have chosen FOR NOW to spend my time enjoying the company of my grandparents and to make sure that they are comfortable. I hope and pray that they are still here to watch me get married, and here long enough to see their great-grandkids.

It's hard to see the two people who practically helped raise me be in so much pain and I sit here feeling helpless because I cannot take the pain away.

Being the oldest, and the only one that lives near my grandparents; I must be strong for not only them, but for myself. I have to be there in every way shape or form. I DO miss blogging, and talking to the friends I have made here since I started this, and I hope that soon or oneday in the near future, even as an escape to everything that has been going on; that I can blog again. Maybe not as frequently, but I do hope that even if I am unable to blog about makeup, that I can at least blog about other things that are important to me, or to even just get some things off my chest. I am trying to not think about the inevitable so much, and to just take things day by day...but it's hard to imagine my life without them.

Again, I want to thank you all who have stood by this blog, or even me for that matter, and for just being true friends through and through. Many of you longtime readers know that this is the first time I have gone so long without blogging, and I would never intentionally just 'stop' without an explanation. I apologize for letting 3 months go by in silence, but it's been the hardest 3 months of my life. I do hope that once I have some peace of mind that everything will be ok in terms of my family's health, that I can pick up where I left off and continue to give you all something to read. Thank you again, and I love you all.

- Vanessa

Hi Vanessa! I AM GLAD to hear that you are okay, Sorry to hear that you and your family has been thru a lot. I don't think ANYONE should be offended by your lack of posts since you blog just for fun and to help others out. People should just be more understanding. I hope your family will all be okay and that your grandparents will be better than fine.
Thanks for being so considerate enough to even provide an update for your readers :-)

GOOD LUCK with everything and God Bless!

Hi Vanessa I'm praying for your grandparents for them to get well. I understand since I was close to my lola and when she became ill I also devoted my time to taking care of her. I feel sorry for the people who got angry about you not blogging. Yes you are a blogger but you have a life too, and a family to take care of, and it's their problem if they don't understand that. Don't mind them and I'm praying for God to give you strength to do everything u gotta do. Take care!

I'm so sorry to hear about what has been going on and it really is immature and sad that some people would react to you in such a careless way! It's not your job to entertain them! Anyways, I wish you and your family all the best and hope you stay strong and all goes well. ♥

Hi Vanessa, I'm sorry to hear that your grandparents have been very ill. I do hope they get well soon, they'll be in our prayers. I am saddened how some of your readers oblige you to blog despite what happened.. Hopefully, with this post, they will understand and not bug you anymore.

Again, I pray your grandparents get well soon, and that your wedding preps go smoothly :)

Best and warmest,

Wow. People are rude. Don't let them get to you. As you said you owe those people nothing. I hope things get better for you and your family :)

Jani said...

Wow I can't believe people have been angered over your lack of posts. It's exactly how you said it, you DO NOT owe any readers anything.

Instead of being angry over your absence those people should be grateful for your previous posts and all your hard work you've put in to this blog. The blog is not your job and it shouldn't take a priority over areas of your life such as family, a job, major occasions or events etc.

Those readers are just selfish, rude and their behaviour is outrageous.

Even if you weren't busy with a wedding, a family illness etc no one should have the right to expect you to keep up the blogging. Many bloggers have decided that they just reached a point in their life where they wanted to stop.

I for one am thankful for the effort and time you've put in to this blog which has helped countless readers in many ways and in return you ask for nothing.

Good luck with the wedding, you'll be a gorgeous bride and I hope your grandparents' health starts to turn for the better.

I'm glad you updated and I'm sure there are a lot of people who misses you. In all honesty, I'm glad you put your family (grandparents) before blogging. I know how hard it is to go through what you're going through (I lost my mother). If people don't understand there is life beyond blogging, they really need to get a life. I know I can't do much for you but if you ever need someone to listen to you, I have big ears. I am always open to listen to your struggle. I will pray for you and your family *huggles*!

I completely understand where you're coming from. I'm in somewhat of the same situation you're in as far as taking care of your grandparents goes. It's gotten to that point for me where I hardly go out anymore because doing these things have suddenly become a priority in my life.

I just wish you all the best with you and your family. I gotta admit that I do miss your blogging and your cuteness (: But just focus on the important things in your life right now because your REAL fans are the ones that will understand that.

Hi Vanessa
Though I rarely leave comments I read your blog daily. I admit I was worried something might have happened to you or your family so I'm glad to see you back.
Some people can be so rude! It's hard to believe. They need to step back a little and put things in perspective (and get a life as well).
The past months have obviously been hard for you, I'll pray that things will get better for you and your whole family soon.
I'm sure all your efforts will be rewarded and you'll have both your grandparents attending your wonderful wedding.

sorry to hear about what you've been through. and if you want to stop blogging, so be it! you shouldnt have to make thousands of people happy by writing them blogs, which are great by the way though you've already written enough.. I only started follwoing you before you stopped blogging and i havent gotten through them all yet. you've been so helpful and informative. we will all grow out of blogging at some stage and I think this is vanessa's time now. even if its for now or for good. Put yourself in her situation then see how you'd feel.

Hi Vanessa!
You are an incredibly strong and wonderful woman, taking care of those who spent at least 20 years of their lives taking care of you. Not only did you have to deal with personal and important family issues and a wedding, but you also dealt with the issue with your blog and your readers gracefully. Forget about those who have been impatient and downright rude to you behind your back [so to speak]; they obviously have no lives if all they do is read your blog and anxiously await a new post from you. Just keep your head high and do what you've been doing for the past 3 years; everything will turn out fine if you just stay positive :]

Love,
Paulina

Those people who are rude to you will be rude regardless, so don't even waste a thought on them. Also, remember that there is life after this one, and it is much better on the other side-there is no pain or suffering or death there. I know you are suffering and I do not want to preach to you, but simply offer you some words of comfort in troubling times. God bless.

I also have health problems in the family, specifically my mother

I think so hard for me to imagine my life without it
I know I can not be the daughter she wanted, but she is the mother that I wanted for my life

It's so good to talk about my feelings with someone who understands, because to me it is not easy ~

I hope that everything improves in your life ... and his grandparents return home.

I hope your wedding to be beautiful, and you look at the audience and see their grandparents there, happy as all the others!

Hello Vanessa,

I'm sorry to hear about the situation with your family. I'm pretty much going through the same things that you are right now (except for planning a wedding =D); my dad just had a double-bypass surgery. It makes me angry that people can be so inconsiderate of your situation just because you haven't been blogging. With all the things going on in our lives, you realize what matters most, and I'm sure that you and I both know that what matters most right now is family. Forget about anyone else who tries to put you down! You go on and do what you need to do. There are many others out there (myself included) who will back you up 100%. I'll be keeping you and your family in my prayers. Take care, and God bless. Hope to see you again soon.

She's ALIVE! I really did worry that something had either happened to you (yes, I even wondered if you had been killed in a car accident or something), or that the wedding plans had gone so bad that you crawled into a hole and just wanted to stay there.

I know this sounds odd, but you cannot possibly imagine how relieved I am that you're ok (physically, at least)!
I'm glad to hear that you're alive and well, not dumped by the boyfriend, not hit by a train, or anything like that. I'm so sorry to hear about your grandparents though. Been there, done that, but with my own parents. Just a few short years ago, I moved my mom and dad up from Palm Springs to a couple of blocks away from me to be able to take care of them (my mother has Alzheimer's and my father's heart was failing him). I was there hours every day, and in the last couple of weeks before my father passed, I spent 18 hours a day at his bedside. It's stressfull, it hurts, it's hard. I pleaded with my father to eat, pleaded with him to get out of the house, pleaded with him to maintain some semblance of a life he once had. It saddened me to no end to see my hero become a shell of what he once was. Life really does go full circle - my parents had become my children. Then one day, I saw it from my father's eyes. I could see where he felt he'd lived a full life, did the things he had wanted to do, was blessed with 4 children and a loving wife - at 85 and a failing heart - what was there for him to look forward to? That really hurt. I didn't want to let go, but realized that he'd lived his life. It was time to move to the next. 364 days after I moved them up here, he passed away. I was thankful I was there. Spend the time you need taking care of those who need you; you'll regret it later if you don't.

I will pray for you , your family, & the people who may have hurt you in any way. Reading this tugged at my heart strings. I am also going through a similar situation. The only family living near my grandparents and taking care of both of them is harder than taking care of my two children, and a single mother at that. I get chocked up just seeing them in that condition, it's heartbreaking. Definitely take the time to focus on you, reserve your strength for your family and not on distractions, such as the negative comments made about you or your family. You are a great person to take care of your grandparents. It's obvious that you have a lot more support from your followers than you do with negative readers. Big picture, they're insignificant and you are the bigger person. I understand that it's hard to watch our family sick and helpless but in the future I know I'll feel better knowing that I was the one by their side.

Hey Vanessa--I don't think I've ever posted a comment before, but I thought I would this time. I had wondered if something had happened either to you or to a loved one to cause the lack of posts, and I'm glad to hear you are okay and that things are looking up for your grandparents. You are right in saying that your first priority is spending time with your family; this blog should really be your absolute last priority, and it is a further testament to your consistently gracious personality that you even took the time to reassure the faceless masses online. In no way do you deserve any of the malicious comments that people have aimed at you. Vanessa, I had the brief pleasure meeting you at this years IMATS in Pasadena, and you were incredibly gracious!
I so feel for you right now. Since June my DH had surgery on his ankle and has been out of work since. My 10 yr old DD had a case of pneumonia, then broke her elbow 5 weeks later.
2 weeks ago my younger brother(age 45) passed away very unexpectedly: AND I just got home from the peds office with my 7 yr old DS, and he has H1N1. Thanks god it's a mild case, but still. I haven't blogged in months...haven't had the time or the energy for much else but waiting on my family.
I just wanted to let you know I feel your pain, sister, and will be praying for you and your family!
Warmly,
Laurie Gauthier-Jones

Don't let the negative comments from rude people get to you. You are doing US a favor by sharing your experiences and knowledge, no one has the right to complain about you being there for your loved ones and not blogging. Hope things look up soon and take care,

Ugh people just annoy me sometimes!! How rude of them to attack you and your family because you haven't BLOGGED?! Wow, if they spend that much time on the computer checking out blogs, it's time to find a new hobby. In any event, I'm sorry you're going through a rough time taking care of your grandparents, we all have things that take us away from our hobbies and friends, but family is the MOST IMPORTANT thing EVER. Just delete all those inconsiderate people's comments and rest assured that the rest of us are nice and will patiently wait for new posts if at all possible! I hope your grandparents get well as soon as possible and see you get married to your sweety! <3

Dear Vanessa, glad to hear from you!

I totally understand why you don't have time or feel priority into blogging, and please let those people talk sh*t if they want to, don't listen to them! I know you are not, but I also know it hurts when people you don't even are being rude and angry for no reasons. Just do what you gotta do, take it easy and focus on the things that are important to you and your family, because that is all what matters right now! Wish you and your family all the best!

My thoughts and prayers to you and your family, and bless your heart for stepping up to the plate and making your grandparents feel so loved and taken care of.
Way too many people just dump their elderly relatives into homes and don't visit or take care of them, it warms my heart to know that there is still love and consideration in the world.

Don't worry about any naysayers; you have enough old or archived blog posts to keep anyone busy forever trying to replicate looks :)
Stay beautiful! (inside and out)

Its sad to know that people got mad at you for not updating. seriously .. People? There is life outside of the internet. it got me mad to know that people got mad over that, lol. I personally thought you've been busy with planning your wedding because i know exactly how its like, it takes all your time. It was hard for me to plan a wedding, work and attend school, its too much work and it really does take too much of your time. Nevertheless, whatever happens in in the end, family always comes first and it always should. I really hope your grandparents get well soon. You Take Care.

First of, I'm so happy to hear that you are ok. As a longtime reader I knew this wasn't something light that you were gone so long. I was hoping it was for wedding reasons though and not this reason. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers, and it's so important to have your family and friends around you in this time. The only concern of yours should be your grandparent's health and also making time for you to enjoy yourself.

Hi Vanessa, sorry to hear about your grandparents being sick I know personally how hard and stressful caring for one person can be let alone two! The things people were saying the last time I popped by to read up on your posts (of which there are zillions!) were disgusting I actually couldn't believe that people would be so cruel, thoughtless and self-centred. Forget the negativity, I'm praying for your grandparents to get well but even though you're looking after them make sure you're taking care of yourself :) x Tilly x

I'm not surprised with the negative responses you've received simply because readers can often be very selfish and thoughtless individuals. I don't think they realize people have lives to live.

I hope your grandparents are feeling as little pain as possible and that you will be able to start your new life soon.

Anonymous said...

I don't want to be redundant, so I'll keep this brief (it must be tiring reading the same comments, lol)...

Your blog is the first makeup blog that I ever came across, and I'm proud to say that. I like that sometimes you'll post random stories, or interesting new pictures from your daily travels - whether it be with family, friends, work, etc.

The problem is that these people with spiteful, rude, and un-nessasary (hehe =X) comments are forgetting the real purpose of a blog. It doesn't have to be about makeup, even if it's the name. You're right that you don't owe anyone anything - except maybe family and close friends and your significant other, but it's not that you owe them anything, but rather that THEY DESERVE your love and attention. Just as you have a right to their affection.

It would be nice to see more reviews, but if anything, I'm just glad that you're safe and healthy! There will always be ups and downs, but you're HUMAN, which means that anything can happen to you, but I'm glad that you're not living your life in regret. You're taking care of the people who mean so much to you, and being there and doing that is really important. And NO ONE should be allowed to criticize you or take away your freedom of choice to do what you think IS RIGHT. I wish/hope for the best.

And thank you for all the help you've given to people, as well as other happenings in your life - people love to hear about others (even if we deny it!). I'm jealous that you're so close to your family - I'm going to work harder to re-connect with mine.

Hi Vanessa,

Wow, I am shocked you've been going through so much, and also the fact of what some people say on the internet without really thinking about the consequences. I wish your grandparents a fast recovery. I can't imagine what you're going through, but it must be a challenge everday. You should be proud of yourself that you're putting in the effort to care for them.
Stay strong!

Don't know how people can be mean about you not blogging in a while... There is an entire archive of looks for people to keep them busy for a lifetime and enough reviews on so many products.
You are only human and there is only so much you can do, and true fans will be supportive regardless of if you are writing a lot or taking it slow because of personal reasons...
People should learn not to selfish and self-centred...
